MS 가 H/W 업체와 손잡고 IPTV 시장을 선점하기 위해 시동을 걸었군요.

이번 MS의 IPTV 솔류션인 Mediaroom 의 내용을 보다보니,

저비용 고효율을 위해 Sigma Designs 에서 개발한 미디어 프로세서를 사용한다고 합니다.

이 프로세서의 스펙을 보니 무지 막강하더라구요. 멀티미디어 처리를 위한 모든 기능이

들어 있는것 같습니다. 이 프로세서의 스펙을 설명한 원문은 다음과 같습니다.

Sigma’s SMP8654 media processor integrates a complete complement of next-generation capabilities for a single-chip system-on-chip (SOC) solution with a multi-core architecture, powerful multimedia processing, robust content security system, and a full complement of peripherals.

The SMP8654 features a powerful 500-Mhz Mips host CPU, a second processor called the IPU for offloading burdensome real-time tasks, and a third processor dedicated to managing security functions.

Its advanced decoder engines support high-definition video decoding of H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10), Windows Media Video 9, VC-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (part 2), the new AVS standard, and can support up to 16 independent streams on screen in different formats.

사용하는 Open IPTV 진영의 행보에 관심이 가는군요.

이제는 개인 방송의 기술을 기반으로 해서 IPTV 쪽으로 더 많은 공부를 해봐야겠습니다.

고화질 디지털 방송을 위해서는 망 사업자의 협조 없이는 불가능합니다. 예전에 저는 기존 망에서 고화질 방송을 위해 P2P 를 통한 트레픽의 분산에 관한 연구개발을   했었습니다. 아이디어는 참 좋았다고 생각하나, 미디어의 특성상 지금의 IPTV 와 같은 화질을 유지하면서 고객을 만족시키기는 많이 부족했었습니다. 어느 기사에서 봤던 것 같은데요.. "썰런" 이라는 오픈IPTV 사업자는 현재의 망에서 채널 변경이   1초 내에 가능한 기술을 개발했다고 합니다. 이것이 사실이라면, 말 그대로 오픈IPTV 는 가능하지 않을까요?? 같은 분야의 연구개발을 주도했었고, 사업화도 했으며, 기술 장벽을 경험한 저로서는 쎌런이 개발했다는 이 기술에 많은 관심이 가는군요. "오픈IPTV"의 건투를 기원합니다!! 하나로텔레콤 오픈IPTV IPTV에서 'IP가 중요하냐? TV가 중요하냐?'를 두고 사업자 간의 시각차가 여전하다. 이러한 견해차는 그동안 방송-통신 융합의 발목을 잡아왔지만 아직 명확한 해결책을 찾지는 못하고 있다. 국내 IPTV 가입자가 150만 가구에 육박하고 있는 가운데, 온전한 IPTV 서비스에 대한 논의가 각처에서 활발하게 이뤄지고 있다. 현재 국내 IPTV 시장은 하나로텔레콤의 '하나TV'와 KT의 '메가TV'가 주도하고 있다. 여기에 디지털케이블TV 사업자 및 다음커뮤니케이션과 셀런의 조인트 벤처 '오픈IPTV'가 가세하고 나섰다. 방송통신위원회가 출범하기 전, IPTV 사업 추진에 관련해 정보통신부와 방송위원회 간에는 사업 주체가 누가 될 것인가를 두고 논쟁이 끊이지 않아왔다. 그 당시에는 '통신사업자 vs 방송사' 간의 주도권 쟁탈전이 주된 이슈였다. 그리고 지난해 말, IPTV 법제정이 되면서 상용화 시점을 눈 앞에 두고 또 다른 형태의 논쟁이 일어나고 있다. 이번에는 통신사업자와 인터넷 기업간의 신경전이다. 궁극적으로는 IPTV 서비스 망을 가지고 있는 통신사업자와 서비스 기반이 없는 인터넷 기업간의 대립구도이기에, 인터넷 기업은 통신사업자의 '망개방'을 원하는 것이다. 인터넷 기업을 대표하는 오픈IPTV 측은 통신 영역인 'IP'와 방송 영역인 'TV'가 똑같이 중요하다는 입장이다. 현재 하나TV(SK텔레콤), 메가TV(KT), 마이엘지TV(LG데이콤) 등 독자적인 서비스를 하는 통신사업자가 망 개방을 통해 IP의 담장을 낮춤으로써, 더 많은 독자 서비스 모델이 경쟁할 수 있게 돼야 한다는 주장이다. 김철균 오픈IPTV 대표는 "현재 국내 IPTV 시장구도는 무선인터넷 서비스의 그것과 같다. 무선망을 장악한 사업자가 게이트를 장악해서 이동통신사업자 외에는 독자 서비스가 힘들다. 이러한 담장을 허물 수 있어야 시장이 활성화 될 수 있다"고 주장했다. 그렇지만 통신사업자들은 그 동안 어렵게 사업을 진행하며 IPTV 상용화 기반을 닦아 놓았는데, 이제와서 오픈IPTV와 같은 경쟁자들이 진입하는 것을 그냥 두고 볼 수 없다는 입장이다. 한 통신사 관계자는 "망동등접근권 보장을 이야기하는데, 매년 수천억원을 들여 투자해 온 망을 공짜로 빌려서 수익사업을 하겠다는 것은 어불성설이다"라고 말했다. 하나로텔레콤 하나TV 콘텐츠 본부장인 김성용 상무는 14일 참가한 한 포럼에서 "지금까지 추진했던 IPTV 사업은 반쪽짜리 사업이다. 실시간 방송이 없었던 것도 그렇고, 쌍방향 서비스나 HD급 VOD 서비스도 미비했다"며 "KT도 그렇지만 현재 네트워크 상황이 온전한 IPTV 서비스를 제공하기에 충분한 용량이 아니다. 서버는 문제 없지만 네트워크는 더 투자가 되야 한다"며 간접적으로 망개방 이슈를 반대했다. 망개방에 대한 통신사 측 입장은 단호하다. 때문에 오픈IPTV 측도 망동등접근 보당이 안된다 해도 '망이용료'를 지불하고 서비스를 하겠다는 입장을 취하고 있다. 현재 오픈IPTV 측은 사업권 획득 여부조차 확실치 않은 불리한 상황이다. 김철균 대표는 "통신사업자는 돈 낼 사람을 정하고 서비스를 제공한다. 그러나 인터넷 사업자는 누가 돈을 낼지 모르기 때문에 고객이 원하는 서비스를 찾을 수 있다"라며 "때문에 IPTV 사업은 인프라나 자본의 경쟁이 아닌, 서비스 경쟁에 초점이 맞춰져야 한다"고 말했다. 올해부터 본격적으로 온전한 IPTV 상용화 서비스가 개시될 것으로 전망되는 가운데, 업계에서는 초기시장에서의 경쟁에 앞서 시장 활성화를 위한 정책 마련이 요구되고 있다. @
